Do you have a friend in a New York State Prison? Do you want to send them a Care Package? Well, you are in luck!! New York State is one of the few states that allow friends and family members to send packages to their incarcerated loved ones. See below for what you will need.

Step 1: Locate the DIN & FACILITY NAME

Make sure that you know the person’s First and Last name. Once you have that information, go to http://nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov/  to find out where that person is located and their DIN # (this is the number that’s used to identify the inmate).

See image below:

 NYS Inmate lookup

Select submit and you’ll get a list of possible names, choose the person you are looking for from the list. Write down the “DIN” and the “Facility” name since you will need this later.

NOTE: If your loved one is located in one of the following 9 facilities then you CAN NOT send them a package (although, sometimes it’s possible via a vendor). You can call the facility to confirm because rules change all the time. For mailing address or phone number go to STEP 2.

  1. Attica
  2. Elmira
  3. Five Points
  4. Shawangunk
  5. Southport Cadre
  6. Wende
  7. Clinton
  8. Great Meadow
  9. Upstate Cadre

STEP 2: LOCATE THE FACILITY MAILING ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER

Now you need to find the address that you will mail the package to. Go to http://www.doccs.ny.gov/faclist.html and look for the name of the facility that you found in STEP 1. Some will have 2 addresses, use the one that says “Inmate Mail”.

Step 3: BUY YOUR ITEMS

Now it’s time to buy items for your care package. Because prisons are highly regulated there are rules you must follow in order for your package to get to your friend or relative. Each facility has its own rules, but there are some general guidelines that all follow.  See the image below for these general rules:

There are some other rules to consider, so I advise you to just stick with simple items that are likely to pass inspection.

While FRUITS and VEGETABLES (the ones that don’t need to be cooked) are allowed, they may spoil in transit so we advise that you skip these. Also items that need refrigeration should also be avoided, unless you surround your shipping box with ice packs BUT this will cause your shipping price to go up. I’ve heard of people freezing the items before shipping and it arriving well, but I’d avoid it altogether because even if you get it expressed delivered, there’s no telling how long it will last in the facility package room.

Step 4: GET READY FOR SHIPPING

Get a box to put your items in. You can get the Flat Rate boxes at the postal office OR just get any box (Note that shipping prices may vary depending on the box size and weight).

Once you’ve packed and sealed your box add a shipping label to it. You can get the labels at the post office, or whatever shipping carrier you are using (e.g. UPS, FEDEX). Make sure that the shipping label has YOUR NAME and a RETURN ADDRESS, they won’t accept the package without it. Also, ensure the recipient’s Name and DIN# is on the packaging slip. See example below:

That’s it, you can now ship your package! Please comment below if you have any questions.
